This album saw Bowie reunited with Brian Eno in another concept piece, this time based on the diary of Nathan Adler from an earlier collaboration of theirs. They entered the studio with no material whatsoever, wanting a completely organic experience. Composition methods used included an updated version of Bowie’s ‘cut up’ technique from the 70s – this time using a program called the Verbasiser. Produced by Bowie, Eno and David Richards, it is a long and experimental rocky album. Outside was, in the main, critically well-received and commercially successful.
