Inspired by Bowie’s wedding to Iman Abdulmajid – and containing songs he wrote specifically for the occasion – Black Tie White Noise featured Ziggy guitarist and friend, Mick Ronson. Critically regarded as a return to form, it went to number one in the UK and did well worldwide. Reunited with Nile Rodgers, who co-produces with Bowie, David covers Cream’s I Feel Free and the Walker Brothers’ Nite Flights. Stylistically, the album is harder and more polished than its predecessors, described by Bowie as “[establishing] a new kind of melodic form of house”.
