The late 60’s proved to be the making of Bowie’s impending stardom – even if he didn’t know it at the time. In this episode Marc and Rob look at the contribution made to David’s career by his first manager-proper Kenneth Pitt who’s undying support and wealth of experience helped db through an unsure part of both his personal life and his career. For in this latest missive from the Bowie ‘boys’ from the North of England you’ll be dragging around a learning curve encompassing a venue that was witness to some of the most ambitious and thrilling gigs of Bowie’s career. The Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park. Also featured – a game of two halves featuring TV chat show host Russell Harty whose two on screen encounters with Bowie were not only 2 years apart – but also poles apart. The first being a bewitching and nervy affair… the second being an edgy, some would say toe-curling exchange with a 7,000 mile distance between them. Harty in London Town…Bowie in Burbank California. Which was probably for the best. Not for the faint hearted.
Looking to find some love in the United States Bowie undertook his first promo tour of America in 1971. He had long flowing locks and wore a (mans) dress. Erm… how can we put this? Well…not everyone understood. One man who definitely did understand way the Mayor Of Sunset Strip. The man who famously hung out with the Rock Elite at his watering hole ‘Rodneys English Disco’… and the visionary who introduced db to California’s Swinging 70’s Beautiful People. Rodney Bingenheimer. Also featured are Biff Rose (composer of Hunky Dory’s Fill Your heart and early live favourite Buzz The Fuzz) and Bowie’s artistic outlet from 1971 to 1980 – RCA Records.

To some she was an attention seeking opportunist…but to others Mary Angela Barnet was Angie Bowie, the woman who steered Bowie away from the unfocussed Genius In Waiting towards the Glam Icon and Rock Star he always wanted to be. There are plenty of ‘Oddities’ to be found whilst tracing the career of David Bowie – but the one that first brought him into the public eye was the ‘Space’ version. Seen by some as a ‘novelty’ record this doom-laden tale was bizarrely used as an anthem for the Apollo 11 moon landing. They obviously didn’t listen to the lyrics. Having failed to make his mark as a Mod and a Baladeer David turns his hand to the world of Folk. He sets up his own Folk club…wears cord pants and grows hi locks. WHAT MORE COULD HE DO! Well…he could always write a brilliant off-kilter opus that tackles consumerism, capitalism, greed …and shoplifting. And that’s exactly what he did. The album was originally called David Bowie (again) but is best loved as Space Oddity.
It was a hardly a Mutual Admiration Society to begin with but Bowie’s love for the fledgling Bruce Springsteen was evident from the songs of his he chose to cover. Unimpressed by db’s blistering version of ‘It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City’ The ‘Boss’ (as we don’t call him) eventually (and publicly) acknowledged David’s talent upon hearing of his passing. And quite right too. In this Episode Rob gets all hot under the collar about another larger than life character who would go on to shape his taste in fashion and culture. Spongebob Squarepants.
